Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared on CNN recently and said this to host Jake Tapper on the subject of making vaccines mandatory.
“I have been of this opinion, and I remain of that opinion, that I do believe at the local level, Jake, there should be more mandates.”
Last week, President Joe Biden, frustrated that his efforts to have 70% of the country vaccinated by the Fourth of July fell short, appeared in front of cameras to say this:
“Our fight against this virus is not over. Right now, as I speak to you, millions of Americans are still unvaccinated and unprotected. And because of that, their communities are at risk, their friends are at risk, the people that they care about are at risk. This is an even bigger concern because of the delta variant.”
In addition, Biden also hinted that he may order mandatory vaccinations for members of the U.S. military as well as sending out people to go door to door across America, “literally knocking on doors” to get Americans vaccinated.
Then there are the scores of colleges and universities making vaccination mandatory for returning students. Not to mention this headline in The New York Times:
Yes, Your Employer Can Require You to Be Vaccinated
Companies can require workers entering the workplace to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to recent U.S. government guidance.
Hmmm.
In 1973 the United States Supreme Court issued its famous ruling on abortion, saying, in part, this in Roe v. Wade:
“This right of privacy, whether it be founded in the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of personal liberty and restrictions upon state action, as we feel it is, or … in the Ninth Amendment’s reservation of rights to the people, is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.”
From that moment on the mantra from the American Left has been “my body, my choice.” Indeed, the movement it spawned self-identifies as “pro-choice.” This is sacred scripture for Democratic Party politicians. So sacred is it that not long ago the very Catholic President Biden was taken to task by Catholic Bishops for abandoning his one-time support for his church’s anti-abortion doctrine and becoming “pro-choice.”
Yet when Americans who wish to remain un-vaccinated from Covid-19 say “my body, my choice” – they are greeted not only with scorn but threats to make the vaccination mandatory – just as President Biden, Dr. Fauci, all manner of colleges and businesses and others have exemplified.
In May, Texas brought the abortion issue back into the news when Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed what is known as a “heartbeat” law – which makes abortion illegal after a fetal heartbeat is detected. Nine states have passed similar laws. In addition, reports The Daily Beast, in another echo of the Biden proposal to send government snoops door-to-door to nose around as to who has and has not been vaccinated, the Texas abortion law provides that:
“….any person who believes that an abortion occurred after a fetal heartbeat can be detected can sue (the abortion provider)—for minimum suggested damages of $10,000.”
In short?
Will Roe v. Wade fall victim to the demands for mandatory vaccinations? Will it become, in essence, another victim of Covid-19?
The pro-mandatory vaxxers have been blissfully unaware that Roe v. Wade and the doctrine of a right to bodily privacy is being undermined – by themselves – when they insist the exact same principle does not apply to anti-vaxxers.
The various “heartbeat” laws around the country are already headed to the courts, as pro-choice supporters insist they are in violation of Roe. One can only imagine the court cases that will flood in from anti-vaxxers resisting mandatory vaccination.
Yet if Roe is the gold standard ruling for “my body, my choice” it is easy to see that there are only two possible outcomes from courts on mandatory vaccinations.
Either Roe’s doctrine of “my body, my choice” is upheld – and mandatory vaccinations will be unconstitutional.
Or, mandatory vaccinations will be ruled as constitutional, thereby striking at the core of Roe’s doctrine of “my body, my choice.” Opening the flood gates for more anti-abortion, pro-life laws in legislatures around the country.
In either case, the issue arises precisely because the “pro-choice” President Biden and the presumably pro-choice Dr. Fauci, not to mention all those presumably pro-choice liberals running America’s colleges and corporations, are insisting – unwittingly – that the doctrine of “my body, my choice” is going to be ignored when it comes to making vaccines mandatory.
Oh the irony.
