Today the Trump administration made a grand stride to minimize a growing problem in the United States. “Birth tourism” has become a popular notion, which has women from around the world traveling to the U.S. for the sole purpose of giving birth so their children can have United States citizenship. New visa rules were published by the Trump administration today that will restrict birth tourism.

Tourist Visa applicants will be denied if they are “determined by consular officers to be coming to the U.S. primarily to give birth, according to the rules in the Federal Register” reported the Associated Press. White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement that “closing this glaring immigration loophole will combat these endemic abuses and ultimately protect the United States from the national security risks created by this practice.”

The desperation of women to have their children receive U.S. citizenship has created “birth tourism agencies.” The Associated Press reported that there are “scattered cases of authorities arresting operators of birth tourism agencies for visa fraud or tax evasion.” Women will now need to prove they are traveling to the U.S. for legitimate medical needs and not just to give birth.

If pregnant women want to travel to the U.S. because they have a medical condition and not simply to give birth, they will be treated the same as all foreigners traveling to the U.S. for medical care. Those seeking care must prove that they have “the money to pay for it – including transportation and living expenses.”

According to the new rules, the State Department “does not believe that visiting the United States for the primary purpose of obtaining U.S. citizenship for a child, by giving birth in the United States – an activity commonly referred to as ‘birth tourism’ is a legitimate activity for pleasure or of a recreational nature.” White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham also said that the new limitations, which will go into effect Friday, that they will “defend American taxpayers from having their hard-earned dollars siphoned away to finance the direct and downstream costs associated with birth tourism. The integrity of American citizenship must be protected.”
