Respect The Flag? Watch NHL Players Stand In Solidarity For National Anthem

NHL

If you’re watching professional sports in the United States from the comfort of your home couch, you will notice a stark difference between them. The NBA is permitting players to wear jerseys displaying social justice phrases. Major League Baseball looked more like a cult as nearly every player kneeled and bowed their heads during the anthem. Some professional soccer leagues are getting rid of the National Anthem entirely.

However, the National Hockey League has proven itself to be a breath of fresh air for freedom-loving, flag respecting American sports fans. Within the last 48 hours, hockey fans have been taking to social media posting clips of solidarity we have not seen in the United States for months.

Video clips circling social media show not just one, but multiple hockey teams, coaches included, standing for the national anthem. On the NHL’s official YouTube page with roughly 1.5 million subscribers, a moving clip of the beginning of the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild game from July 29.

The YouTube video thumbnail reads, “Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Matt Dumba, Nazem Kadri and Jordan Greenway of the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild stand in solidarity during pregame anthems to show support for the ongoing social-equality movement.”

In the video, players do not stand with their respective teams across the ice from their opponent. Instead, the players are mixed, standing and, in many cases, have their arms around an opposing team’s shoulders. What a novel idea, stand together to show support. Stand together to show equality. Stand together to fight inequality.
