New Studies Suggest Higher Percentage of Positive People Show No Symptoms of COVID-19

Two studies were released this week that shed new light on asymptomatic COVID-19 individuals. Deemed “silent” COVID-19, the studies suggest a whopping percentage of individuals who have had or will have the virus do not present any symptoms. One study, released by JAMA Network Open “found that 42 percent of cases from a group of people in Wuhan, China, were asymptomatic” reported to NBC News.

The study conducted in Wuhan found that of 78 patients who tested positive for COVID-19, 33 of the individuals experienced zero symptoms. “These patients were more likely to be women, and more likely to be younger, in their 20s, 30s and early 40s” according to the study.

Another study published in Thorax, “found much higher rates of asymptomatic individuals: 81 percent of cases on a cruise to Antarctica.” Australian researchers conducted the study which analyzed travelers on a cruise to Antarctica in mid-March. Eight days after the ship set sail, one passenger came down with a fever; the first to show any signs of the virus.

In the two weeks following, eight people were so ill they had to be evacuated. All of the remaining 217 passengers on board were tested for COVID-19. Just over half, 59 percent, tested positive, but here’s the scary part: only 19 percent had symptoms. An astounding 81% of positive passengers were completely symptom-free.

Infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. William Schaffner discusses the complicated intersection where the physical and mental aspects of the virus meet. “Many people still haven’t grasped the notion that asymptomatic people can be so common, and they wonder why it is they have to wear the mask when they’re feeling well, or why they have to keep doing this social distancing stuff,” said Schaffner.

Fortunately, the Centers for Disease Control estimates a lower percentage of asymptomatic cases at 35 percent. Additionally, NBC News reports the study from China declared “asymptomatic individuals may not spread the virus for as long as symptomatic patients do. The patients without symptoms shed the virus for about eight days, compared with 19 days among those who did have symptoms, the researchers, from Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, found.”
