While the majority of celebrities are chastising white America from the safety of their own homes whilst bailing protestors out of jail and encouraging you to do the same, Kanye West has different plans. The rapper has found a way to actually make a difference in the horrendously sad absence created by George Floyd’s murder.
Kanye has offered to pay full college tuition for George Floyd’s six-year-old daughter. Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, has recently captured the hearts of the world when a video was released on top of her uncle’s shoulders proudly declaring “daddy changed the world.”
Kanye set up a 529 college fund for Gianna as part of a $2 million donation to various families of African Americans who have been killed by police. TMZ reported West is giving “to the families and legal teams fighting for Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.” Taylor was an emergency medical worker who “was shot and killed by Louisville cops in her own home in a ‘no-knock warrant’ case, in which cops allegedly busted in without warning” according to TMZ.
25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was jogging on his usual route in South Georgia when two white men, father, and son, chased him down in their truck and shot and killed him. This crime occurred only months ago, on February 3.
Another stark difference between most outspoken celebs and Kanye is he joined the protesters on the streets in his hometown of Chicago. Specifically, he walked with the Chicago Public Schools students. Kanye also pledged to donate to several black-owned businesses in Chicago. A rep confirmed the Chicago donations to TMZ as well as giving “nationwide that have been in crisis and impacted by the unrest in the U.S.”
Kanye has been largely quiet on social media, choosing action over words. He did join in ‘blackout Tuesday’ by posting a black square. The movement was initiated as “a campaign where brands agreed not to buy or sell for a day in order to focus on matters of racial inequality” reported The Daily Mail.
