Shortly ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin (WV) told the president that he should change his tone by not berating Republicans as he has previously done when addressing the American people.
“Reset it. Say today is a new day. Recalibrate,” Manchin said during an appearance on Fox News. “He could not have accomplished everything they’re taking credit for without our Republican friends for working with us. Take credit for that.”
“Don’t just berate people just because they happen to have a D or an R next to their name. That’s what America is sick and tired of,” Manchin said. “So he can set that. He’s the leader of the free world. Reset that tonight.”
During a speech last year, Biden told the more than 74 million Americans that voted for former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election – along with anyone else who supported Trump – that they “represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”
“There is no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans, and that is a threat to this country,” Biden added.
Biden went on to call for the United States to be a “nation of hope and unity,” while saying in the next sentence that Trump supporters “made their choice. They embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies.”
