This weekend, Van Jones — CNN commentator, longtime Democrat, nobody’s idea of a conservative plant — told his own party’s radical wing to knock it off. He didn’t hedge it. Democrats, he said, don’t need “party poopers.” So stop, he told them, pooping in the punch bowl — and then telling everybody the turds are ice cubes. They aren’t. And we’re smart enough to know the difference.
It’s a blunt line. It was meant to be.
Here’s why it matters. Van Jones isn’t some backbench crank. He worked in the Obama White House. He’s spent two decades as one of the most visible progressive voices in American media. When a man like that says the DSA is dragging his party into “regressive” territory — his word, not Fox’s, not the New York Post’s — that’s not a talking point. That’s an alarm going off inside the house.
And what set him off wasn’t abstract. He named names, sort of — not people, but positions. Support for Hamas. “No police, no prisons, no borders.” Treating every person with money as the villain of the story. He said it plainly: what does universal health care have to do with any of that? Nothing. One is a policy. The other is a mood, dressed up as a policy, and increasingly it’s a mood with primary wins behind it — DSA-backed candidates knocking off long-serving Democrats in New York, in Colorado, in state legislatures nobody used to watch.
Jones sees where that goes. He’s watched his party’s leadership hesitate, hoping nobody notices while they wait out the storm. His message, stripped of the punch bowl imagery, was simple: We see you. And normal Democrats are not going to keep pretending they don’t.
It’s not common anymore for someone to stand up inside his own party and say, essentially, not in my name — and say it in public, on the record, knowing his own side will come after him for it first.
Which is, in its way, the real story here. Not that the far left overreached — everyone with eyes has seen that coming for a while. The story is who finally said so, and out loud. It wasn’t a Republican strategist. It wasn’t Fox News. It was one of their own, in language blunt enough for anyone to understand, that ideas matter, that words have meaning, and that turds, however you dress them up, are still turds.
Somebody had to say it. It’s notable it was him.
