The Justice Department is weighing proposals that could block transgender Americans from purchasing firearms, sources told The New York Post.
In the aftermath of the deadly Minneapolis Catholic church shooting by Robin Westman, who identified as a trans woman, DOJ officials are exploring steps the Trump administration might take to curb Second Amendment rights for some Americans, according to those familiar with the talks.
Some inside the department argue the move could be justified as a follow-on to Trump’s earlier executive order barring transgender service in the military.
One option under consideration, a Justice official told CNN, would have the president formally declare that people who identify as transgender are mentally ill — and therefore not legally permitted to own guns.
