Top GOP Rep On Biden Document Scandal: Watergate Started As A Small Burglary And Led To The President Resigning

In an interview over the weekend, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), the new chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, noted some of the similarities between President Joe Biden’s classified document scandal and the Watergate scandal that led to former President Richard Nixon’s resignation.

The first set of classified documents were found in Biden’s possession on November 2, just days before the midterm elections. More documents were found in December, but it was not until January that it was revealed to the public in a report from CBS News that the first set of documents had been found. More sets of classified documents have continued to be discovered by the Department of Justice as they investigate Biden.

McCaul made the comments during an interview with Martha Raddatz on ABC News’ “This Week” after the Department of Justice announced on Friday that it had found even more mishandled classified documents in Biden’s possession, some of which from his time as a Delaware senator.

“This broke a week before the midterm elections, and they swept it under the rug,” McCaul said. “Now we’re just finding out.”

“You think there will be tremendous political fallout?” Raddatz asked McCaul.

“I don’t know,” McCaul answered. “You know, Watergate started as a very small burglary, and it led to the president of the United States resigning. So I don’t know what’s there until we see the documents.”

“The way I look at it, my wife is a Naval intelligence analyst,” McCaul continued. “If she took one document home, classified, she would be prosecuted; me, I would be prosecuted.”

Notably, during an interview on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” in September, Biden slammed former President Trump for classified documents that had been found at his home in Florida, saying it was “totally irresponsible.”

“The FBI spread the documents out on a floor to make a record of what was found. When you saw the photograph of the top-secret documents laid out on the floor at Mar-a-Lago, what did you think to yourself looking at that image?” host Scott Pelley asked.

“How that could possibly happen? “ Biden said. “How anyone could be that irresponsible. And I thought, what data was in there that may compromise sources and methods? By that I mean, names of people who helped, or et cetera. And it’s just totally irresponsible.”
