The Media’s China Problem

China Corona

Well isn’t this interesting.  Sunday night on Mark Levin’s Fox TV show Life, Liberty and Levin, Mark hosted The Hudson Institute’s Chinese strategy director Dr. Michael Pillsbury. Pillsbury’s appearance was headlined this way:

Michael Pillsbury: American media facing ‘understandable intimidation’ from Chinese government

Among other things Dr. Pillsbury said this about the media:

“‘…our media has an understandable intimidation by the Chinese,’ Pillsbury continued. “[They] won’t let people who speak ill of China come into China to work.

…Pillsbury pointed to China’s recent expulsion of three reporters from The Wall Street Journal, adding that the media is very concerned about having access to the country.

‘We’re taking counter-actions to it,’ he said. ‘Secretary [of State Mike] Pompeo has done some very excellent things to declare Chinese media outlets here part of the Chinese government that have to register before they go see anybody, because that’s how their media functions.’”

Well now.

Is access by the American media to China important? Yes. But getting that access by appeasing the censorship demands of the Chinese? A seriously bad decision.

Twice now the liberal media has rushed to bow to the demands of the Chinese.

The first time was after January 31st of this year. President Trump announced his travel restrictions on travel from China. China responded this way, as reported by CNN:

US enforces coronavirus travel restrictions. China says it’s an overreaction

Quickly CNN was on board with the Chinese view. Here was the CNN headline

The US coronavirus travel ban could backfire. Here’s how

“(CNN)Experts say travel restrictions the Trump administration put in place to stop the novel coronavirus from spreading could have unintended consequences that undermine that effort.

It’s been days since the US restrictions went into effect, blocking foreign nationals who’ve visited China in the past two weeks from coming to the US.
Details about the US travel ban’s impact are still emerging. But some are already urging the US to reconsider.

…..The director-general of the World Health Organization also weighed in this week, calling on countries not to impose travel restrictions.”

Then there was the “don’t call the Wuhan virus the Wuhan virus” routine …after those suggesting that doing so was racist were revealed to have been routinely doing that themselves.

In fact, here is the CNN website in the early phases of this nonsense. Sample headlines:

Washington state patient is discharged from the hospital

From CNN Gina Yu and Ben Tinker

The first US patient to have a confirmed case of Wuhan coronavirus, a man in his 30s, has been discharged from the Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington, the hospital said Monday in a statement.

The Wuhan virus has turned China’s gambling mecca into a ghost town

From CNN’s Ivan Watson, Sandi Sidhu and Brad Olson

What travelers need to know
From CNN’s Marnie Hunter
Much is still unknown about the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, and health officials are urging vigilance.

And on and on it went, as captured in this laugh-inducing video put together by the Media Research Center.

What changed from CNN – and others in the media – using the Wuhan Virus repeatedly, then suddenly switching and calling it racist? Could it be this warning from the “Global Times” – an outlet of the Chinese Communist Party? Says the Times:

Labeling China as a ‘disease incubator’ is unscientific and racist: experts

This gem says this:

“Regionalizing pandemics is not only unscientific and potentially racist, but also ignores China’s contribution of research progress in infectious disease control around the world, they stressed.”

And after the Chinese government said this? On a dime CNN and other outlets suddenly began saying that, yes indeed, the use of the phrase “Wuhan virus”  by conservative commentators was now racist. A phrase which they themselves had used repeatedly.

Whatever else lies ahead in what is a serious and genuine global pandemic, the fact that various liberal media outlets in the United States have abruptly started acting as assets of the Chinese government is going to continue to batter their credibility.

Credibility which, after Russia-Russia-Russia!!!  and the impeachment hoax was in seriously bad shape to begin with.
