Hannity’s Home Run: Live Free Or Die

Over here at The American Spectator I posted a review of Sean Hannity’s new book  Live Free or Die: America (And The World) On The Brink. It is, as I called it, the necessary book of 2020.

The review was written before the news was announced that Joe Biden had picked the left-leaning California Senator Kamala Harris as his vice-president. But the book is a red flag warning exactly what it would mean if the Biden-Harris ticket were to win this election.

I wanted to take a moment here to focus on two specific Reagan quotes.

First:

“You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well, I’d like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There’s only an up or down: [up] man’s old — old-aged dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.”

And then this one:

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

Everything Hannity is warning about in this book – everything Reagan warned about – is epitomized by the Biden-Harris ticket. The Democrats are now on a full speed ahead race to the far, far left. To socialism. A race that will indeed have consequences.

As would be expected, the Republican National Committee was quickly out of the gate with the Harris announcement to point to her record. It includes (but is not limited to!)

– “Eliminating private health insurance

– The $93 trillion Green New Deal

– Decriminalizing illegal border crossings

Giving illegals taxpayer-funded health care

– A massive tax hike on hardworking Americans.”

I would add to this Biden and Harris’s support for banning fracking, something that would cost some 600,000 jobs in my home state of Pennsylvania alone.

There will be plenty of time to dissect Harris’s record in more detail than this in the next couple of months. The vetting by the American people has begun.  But without question, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the epitome of exactly what Hannity is warning about in his book.

Hannity writes:

“The ability of socialism to wreck an economy is actually pretty incredible – its an awesome force of nature, like a tornado or a tsunami.”

Hannity was spot on. An example: the 2008 financial crisis. Writing in The American Spectator, my Reagan White House colleague Peter Wallison went into detail at the time about what caused the crisis. In part, he wrote this:

“….I believe that the sine qua non of the financial crisis was U.S. government housing policy, which led to the creation of 27 million subprime and other risky loans — half of all mortgages in the United States — which were ready to default as soon as the massive 1997-2007 housing bubble began to deflate. If the U.S. government had not chosen this policy path — fostering the growth of a bubble of unprecedented size and an equally unprecedented number of weak and high-risk residential mortgages — the great financial crisis of 2008 would never have occurred.”

Which is to say, the “great recession” of 2008 was directly caused by liberals/left-wingers (think: then-Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) and California’s Maxine Waters) injecting the government into free market housing policy. It was the socialist insistence on inserting the government into U.S. housing policy that, exactly as Hannity is saying in general of socialism, wrecked the American economy exactly as “an awesome force of nature, like a tornado or a tsunami.”

Over here at – yes, the self-proclaimed “progressive” site Real Economics one finds this in 2019 – when Biden was in disfavor with progressives in a presidential field that included Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The headline:

How Joe Biden helped spark the Global Financial Crash of 2007-2008

It says, in part, this:

“As a Senator from Delaware, Joe Biden was one of the major promoters of the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BACPA).””

Written by banks and credit card companies being swamped by rapidly rising rates of personal bankruptcy in the early 2000s, BACPA made it much more difficult for individuals to enter formal bankruptcy.

Not surprisingly, it did not occur to American financial and political elites, like Senator Joe Biden, that simply making it more difficult for individuals to declare bankruptcy did absolutely zilch to solve the economic hard times suffered by people who are bankrupt.

So, what do you think people in financial straits did when they can no longer file for bankruptcy?

Yep, folks, lots of them stopped paying their home mortgages. This was especially noticeable at the time for subprime mortgages.

And what did the problems in subprime mortgages cause?

Well, it blew out these fancy financial derivatives based on mortgage loans, called credit default swaps.

And the collapse of credit default swaps brought down Bear Stearns in March 2008, which was followed in September 2008 by the collapses of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, and AIG. And it was all downhill from there for the rest of the world economy.”

In other words, to return to Hannity’s warning: “The ability of socialism to wreck an economy is actually pretty incredible – it’s an awesome force of nature, like a tornado or a tsunami.”

Indeed it is. And with the Harris pick, Biden is making it emphatically clear that he and she would be leading the country down the same socialist path that helped Biden and other liberals cause the global financial crash in 2008.

What Sean Hannity has written in Live Free or Die is a crystal clear warning to the unknowing, the unwary, and the uninformed of exactly what is at stake in the 2020 election. While written before the announcement of Harris as Biden’s running mate, Hannity’s book is a roadmap of exactly what this radical socialist ticket would mean for America.

And none of it is good.

Obama Warns Donors On Conservative Media

The headline over there at The New York Times was this:

Obama Unleashes on Trump Privately as He Raises $24 Million for Biden

Along with the standard left-wing drivel that the President was pushing – the usual “Republicans are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic” business that they wheel out every election cycle – the ex-president said this in speaking to Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. The Times reported:

“During his conversation with Mr. Pritzker, Mr. Obama spoke about how Mr. Trump has a core base that ‘filters out any contradictory information.’

‘It’s just glued to Fox News and Breitbart and Limbaugh and just this conservative echo chamber — and so, they’re going to turn out to vote,’ Mr. Obama said. ‘What he has unleashed and what he continues to try to tap into is the fears and anger and resentment of people who, in some cases, really are having a tough time and have seen their prospects or communities where they left, declining. And Trump tries to tap into that and redirect in nativist, racist, sexist ways.’”

Stop right there. Catch this line? The Trump conservative base is “just glued to Fox News and Breitbart and Limbaugh and just this conservative echo chamber — and so, they’re going to turn out to vote.”

Now conservative media is everywhere, and as Rush has said it is massive – and I would add massively powerful.

I’ll say this for Obama. He has gotten it right – millions of Americans are listening to conservative media. No less than Rush Limbaugh touched on this subject on Friday – when he celebrated his 32nd year on radio. Here is part of what Rush said:
“We talk about it a lot. In 1988, there was a media monopoly. You had the three networks and the two newspapers, and that was it — in 1988 and years prior — and they owned everything. They owned what was news and what didn’t get reported. They owned commentary. They literally owned the concept of what the American people were told in the form of news; then 1988 comes. This program debuts.

Now, the purpose of this program was not to bust up the Drive-By Media monopoly. The purpose of this program was to be a financial success. And to do that, it had to be a ratings success. So it had to be genuinely successful. This program’s objective was to acquire the largest audience possible and to hold that audience for as long as possible so as to be able to charge confiscatory advertising rates. That was the business plan.

…For four years, ’92 to ’96, we’re on television and radio, and two books that sold eight million copies total — ten million, actually, if you count the hardcover. Then national conservative talk shows hosted by Hannity (who was one of my first guest hosts), and then it just explodes with Fox News in 1996-1997….

…The success of conservative media all… By the way, let’s not forget the websites and the blogs. I mean, it’s massive, this… Call it “conservative media,” “alternative,” whatever. I mean, it’s massive now. Compared to what existed in 1988, it is massive…”

Rush was also saying that with all this conservative media there are people wondering why so many kids are essentially pro-communist as in these “protests” – riots – around the country. Indeed.

But the point here is that Barack Obama is right to be alarmed. Millions of Americans are in fact tuning into conservative media in all its various incarnations. He understands exactly what headlines like these mean.

Fox News dominates May, trounces CNN as ‘Hannity’ finishes atop cable news 

Tucker Carlson Has Highest-Rated Program In Cable News History 

For those with historical memory, conservatives are a long, long way from the day in 1955 when a young William F. Buckley Jr. launched the conservative National Review, followed twelve years later when a young R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. launched The American Spectator, the magazine where I now hang my hat.

Now conservative media is everywhere, and as Rush has said it is massive – and I would add massively powerful. This is what explains why conservatives in the spotlight are the target of everything from advertiser boycotts to lawsuits to firings from this or that liberal network – all of which and more have one objective: To silence us.

And as may be observed with the celebration of Rush’s 32nd year on the air, with Fox ratings and more – it won’t work.  We are here to stay.

And that is exactly what has Barack Obama worried.

He should be.

Cathy Areu’s Hannity Fiction

The headline over at Mediaite – no right-wing publication there – was this:

Holes Emerge in Cathy Areu’s Lawsuit Against Fox News Hosts Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity

The story, written by reporter Rudy Takala, says this:

“Inconsistencies are emerging in claims made by Cathy Areu, a once-periodic Fox News guest, that she was harassed by some of the network’s biggest names — including prime time anchor Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity. New emails obtained by Mediaite shed further light on the case.

In a lawsuit filed on Monday in the Southern District of New York, Areu claims she was harassed by Carlson, Hannity and other employees of the network, and that she was largely barred from appearing after she declined their advances. In an initial response, the company said the claims were ‘completely false.’”

In sum, Takala reports new e-mails have been unearthed that have “undermined some of her claims.”

One Areu claim about Hannity, in particular, caught my attention. Takala reported:

“In the lawsuit, Areu claims, she was a ‘relatively regular’ guest on Hannity’s prime-time show until March 8, 2018. ‘On that day, Mr. Hannity, on set and in front of the entire studio crew – and completely unsolicited – threw $100 on the set desk,’ the suit claimed. ‘He then began calling out to the men in the room and demanding that someone take Ms. Areu out on a date for drinks at Del Friscos. He repeatedly yelled, ‘who wants to take her on a date?’ ‘Take her on a date to Del Friscos.’”

Areu ‘was completely mortified,’ the lawsuit added, ‘and made clear that she was incredibly uncomfortable with Mr. Hannity’s misogynistic behavior by quietly pleading with one of her friends in the room to accept the money so that the humiliation would end. Thankfully, none of the staff cooperated with Mr. Hannity, even after he repeatedly chided one particular male employee for being ‘afraid to take out a beautiful woman.’”

Why did this particular story catch my attention? Because I personally have been a guest on Hannity many times.  One occasion that I recall vividly was a panel show, an occasional Hannity feature in which a dozen or so panelists, fanned out in three rows as if an audience, comment on the news of the day, with Hannity acting as the host/master of ceremonies. This particular panel included men and women both, some Fox contributors, some not. I had met most of them from various of my own Fox appearances over the years, but there were some new ones I did not know.

And when the show was over? (And, as a matter of fact, here I am that very night after the show with the host, the other guests out of the picture range and chatting with each other and Hannity staff.) Exactly as Areu is saying, Sean, ever the gracious host, urged us to go the very same nearby restaurant – Del Frisco’s – on him. Men and women alike. He urged us on in the manner of a life coach – go out there and spend a little time socializing with each other and get to know one another. No one – no one – took his urgings to spend time together as anything more than a generous host who wants to make sure his guests relax and have a good time.

In fact, in the current seriously bizarre Trump-hating moment, we had all been targeted at some point or another for defending the president. And whether we knew one another or not before the show, the bond between us all was self-evident. So, those of us who had no further commitments that night took up our host’s invitation. His staff took a headcount and flagged the restaurant we were coming. We went – and had a great evening on Sean Hannity, even, as one of Areu’s e-mails now reveals of herself, taking pictures of our drinks to send back to our absent host.

Takala’s report also says this:

“Areu’s lawsuit claimed that she believes the incident resulted in her being barred from future appearances: “After this incident, and Ms. Areu’s failure to ‘play along,’ Ms. Areu was hardly ever, if ever at all, invited back to appear on ‘Hannity’ on Fox News Channel.”

According to Fox News, its records indicate Areu appeared on Hannity a total of nine times between the date of the alleged incident, March 8, 2018, and July 3, 2019. Of that number, Fox said, five appearances took place in the four months directly after the incident. A search by Mediaite confirmed that Areu appeared repeatedly on the show following the alleged incident, both with Hannity and with guest hosts.

The network claimed that on one of those subsequent appearances, Areu thanked Hannity again for the drinks, and he again gave her and the same friend money for another round of drinks.”

Which is to say, Areu’s story, as challenged by documented-in-real-time records of her Hannity appearances, simply doesn’t hold water.

In fact, I have on other occasions personally socialized with Sean Hannity and others – men and women both. And I never – say again never – saw Sean act as other than the gentleman and friend that he in fact is.

As Mediaite also reports, her tales about Tucker Carlson have also been challenged by records of her appearances on Tucker’s show. Notably, she presents the same sort of tale she did with Hannity – imagining some sort of personal invite, and when she refused she was retaliated against by a lack of invites to do Tucker’s show – when in fact the records of her appearances flatly contradict her.

And her e-mails to Howard Kurtz? Suffice to say they do not paint a flattering image of the sender.

On and on this kind of thing goes in this lawsuit. And while I know some of the people named in this lawsuit better than others and know some not at all, one thing is crystal clear. Over and over and over again the simplest of human kindnesses or basic logistics are repeatedly translated by Areu as something they, based on my own repeated Hannity experiences -not to mention life – are flatly not.

Newsflash? Having logged hundreds of hours over the years on cable news, the fact of the matter is that the business itself is necessarily geared to news events. The big news of the moment can shift in a blink of the eye from Topic A to Topic Z. And that, dear reader, is why a guest can disappear from a show and not be re-invited for months. It has zero to do with sex.

To illustrate? On one occasion while at CNN, I was on Anderson Cooper’s show with CNN colleagues, all of us there to discuss the latest politics of the moment. All of a sudden, big news: President Trump had ordered an airstrike against a Syrian airbase. In a blink Anderson went to a commercial break, all of his guests were ushered out of the studio – and we were replaced by a quickly gathered collection of CNN military experts. Well, of course. This is the way the business works.

Think of our quite current situation with the COVID virus. Before it arrived, Fox and its competitors were spending hours on the obvious: the unfolding 2020 presidential election. Primaries, caucuses, campaign debates, the conduct of the media, and so on. Thus come the show-invites to people like me – people with serious political/media experience who know the political/media ropes and can help explain/discuss.

Then – the virus hits. No one wants to listen to a political/media commentator. They want to hear from doctors and scientists. Of course, they do! So….those of us heavy into politics quickly and understandably find our invites vanishing. If you are a cable news network executive or host this is self-evidently logical. As a commentator, Ms. Areu should get it as well. Clearly, she not only does not get it but attributes her lack of invitations to something else altogether.

It isn’t simply foolish to assume that lack of an invite has anything to do with yourself. It is a lack of understanding of how all of these shows work – and must work. To not only assume there is something conspiratorial or wrong with not being asked back for a while to do a show, but ascribing that quite normal cable news trait to punishment for some leering, unfulfilled sexual motive is as wrong and naïve as it is offensive. Not to mention suing somebody because of it.

Simply put? As Mediaite’s Takala says:

“Over the last several days, records of Areu’s appearances on the network and other publicly available information has undermined some of her claims.”

Indeed they have. Without knowing those records existed, I was certain, based on my own personal experience at Fox with Hannity, that there would in fact be “holes” in Areu’s tales. In the world of 21st-century technology, too many e-mails and calendars documenting everything from personal correspondence to appearances on shows are out there.

Now they are made visible for all to see. Revealing Cathy Areu – in her own words and in her own actions.

Not good.

Mark Levin Nails It On Hannity

Mark Levin appeared on Hannity Thursday night and in his inimitable style knocked it out of the park.

On a day when the Bernie Sanders take over of the Democrat’s platform was announced, with Biden surrendering to the socialists he had (barely)managed to defeat, Mark made the following observations:

  • Biden has surrounded himself with radical kooks, and the Democratic Party is dealing with a growing anti-Semitic movement in its ranks, with anti-Americanism at its core.
  • Biden’s pals at the University of Delaware are hiding his Senate records that were donated to the University years ago and not opened to the public.
  • The Supreme Court is “tyrannical” and “has done more damage to the Constitution” than the left-wing rioters in the last few months.
  • The Court’s decision to let every “podunk prosecutor”  rummage through the President’s extensive taxes is nothing more than giving a weapon to partisans who want to rummage through them for political purposes.
  • Democrats in Congress didn’t want to rummage through Obama or Bill Clinton’s taxes or Biden’s either. Why is Trump being targeted? Because he is the first president to come directly from the private sector as opposed to having spent his entire career in public office.
  • The Obamas, Clintons, Biden, Gore become millionaires selling their prior offices for big bucks. Trump, who made his billions before he ran for office, gives up his presidential salary for charity. Congress is supposed to have legislative oversight – not spend their time investigating a president’s finances. Justice Alito was right that a local prosecutor can’t indict a president – so what does he want his tax returns for in the first place? The answer: Politics.
  • He blasted Congress and prosecutors for trying to get at “non-disclosure” agreements Trump had over the years., wondering how many existed in the offices of the prosecutors trying to get to Trump’s finances.
  • The Obama administration attempted a “coup” against the Trump presidency. Trump, he said, must wonder if they are all out to get him – adding “they ARE all out to get him.”
  • This election is not about Joe Biden. This election is between those Americans who love this country – and those who do not. It is between those who loved 1776, who believe in the Founders – Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, John Adams, and the rest- and those who do not.
  • Biden hasn’t denounced the rioters other than once. Nancy Pelosi has never condemned the violence. Why? Because the rioters are Democrats – Bernie Sanders supporters.
  • The Democratic Party has a history of anti-Americanism. It supported slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow.
  • Last but not least he called the modern-day Democrats “crazy bastards.”

This was then and is now worth watching:

Mark Levin is exactly right. This election is not about Joe Biden. It is about a deadly serious Marxist attempt to take control of the country, using Biden as their puppet. Whether it’s the destruction of statues of American heroes with names like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Grant, or Frederick Douglass. Whether it is undermining the Constitution to allow local prosecutors to rummage through a president’s taxes or Congress impeaching a president for no other reason than sheer hatred, all of this has to be defeated in November.

These “crazy bastards” are a serious clear and present danger to America and the very freedoms Americans cherish.

Mark Levin nailed it exactly Thursday night. Thank God he’s there to it.
