In the Tom Clancy thriller The Hunt for Red October, the bad-guy Russian submarine captain chasing the defecting Red October impatiently fires a torpedo – which promptly boomerangs.
Yells his angry first officer: “You arrogant ass, you’ve killed us.”
And so he had.
The scene comes to mind as former Vice President Biden flees New Hampshire, where the man who campaigned on his “electability” came in fifth. This follows up on his fourth-place showing in the botched Iowa caucus. The Biden campaign is now on life support. Similar showings in South Carolina and Nevada will doubtless kill it off altogether.
For which Joe Biden can thank House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and impeachment obsessive Congressman Adam Schiff.
Pelosi and Schiff, obsessed with impeaching Trump, succeeded not only in driving Trump’s popularity skyward – but driving the Biden campaign into the ground.
The hard reality is that in the obsessive Pelosi-Schiff drive to impeach Donald Trump, they wound up killing the Biden campaign. Every day of the unfolding impeachment drama brought decidedly unwanted attention to Hunter Biden’s leveraging of his father’s vice-presidential post to rake in millions from countries where his father was the “point man” for the Obama administration.
Ukraine? There is Hunter, without a nano-second of experience in the oil and energy field being paid a fortune to sit on the board of the shady Ukrainian energy company Burisma. And there is Joe on videotape boasting that he threatened to withhold a billion dollars in US aid to the Ukrainian government unless the prosecutor investigating Burisma was fired. Biden got his way. The video has long since gone viral.
China? There are the photos of Hunter in China with Dad on a state visit, mere weeks later scoring a massive investment deal worth over a billion dollars with the state-run Bank of China.
In the middle of all this impeachment craziness, more unwanted attention to Biden comes out with the release of Peter Schweizer’s meticulously researched tale of Biden family corruption in his bestselling Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America’s Progressive Elite.
And then there is the President himself, taunting at rallies: “Where’s Hunter?” The razzing question to his would-be Democratic opponent got such a response that the Trump campaign quickly slapped it on t-shirts — to brisk sales.
For all of this Joe Biden can thank Pelosi and Schiff. Without the constant spotlight on impeachment, Hunter Biden and his shadowy use of his father’s vice-presidential influence would be in the shadows still.
But Pelosi and Schiff, obsessed with impeaching Trump, succeeded not only in driving Trump’s popularity skyward – but driving the Biden campaign into the ground.
For which, Tom Clancy-style, Joe Biden is well within his rights to say to Pelosi and Schiff:
“You arrogant asses, you killed my campaign.”
