Michael Bloomberg’s 2020 campaign has had a few bad days. With the release of an audio recording of Bloomberg saying, “We put all the cops in minority neighborhoods,” because “that’s where all the crime is,” have many questioning whether he should continue to seek the Democratic party’s nomination for president.
To make matters worse, it now appears that the Bloomberg campaign is holding a “Mike for Black America” event in Houston, TX. The event is planned to take place at the Buffalo Soldier National Museum.
The event advertisement states, “Please join Mike Bloomberg and some of the nation’s most inspiring black leaders and entrepreneurs for a celebration of the black entrepreneurial spirit.” Local radio advertisements for the event have been heard encouraging people to come for live music and food trucks. With news of the Bloomberg campaign paying social media influencers to look cool, it is not too surprising that the campaign is trying to gain fans by essentially hosting a free music festival. The free music and food might be the only reason why people show up to this event, especially considering the “Mike for Black America” Facebook page has a grand total of 13 likes at the time of this story’s publication. The tweet promoting this event had a total of 18 likes and 5 retweets.

Launching the campaign’s outreach to minorities who Bloomberg is on tape justifying throwing “against a wall,” comes across as tone-deaf and detached from reality.
Maybe Bloomberg could spend a few million dollars on a dedicated staff who could tell him when the optics of an event will cause a PR disaster.
