President Trump is set to sign the 200th executive order of his second term — a pace without precedent in modern American history.

On Friday, when he puts pen to paper to rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War, it will mark his 200th order in just 228 days, a little over seven months since returning to the White House in January. By this count, Mr. Trump has issued more executive orders at this stage than the past 16 presidents combined.

“President Trump is the most effective and hardest-working president in history. By signing executive orders at the highest rate in decades, he has quickly implemented the American people’s agenda to cool inflation, secure the border, and restore peace through strength,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told The Washington Times. She added that the War Department order “makes clear that under President Trump our military is about not just defense, but also offense. He is using all tools at his disposal to strengthen our national security, deter threats abroad and Make America Strong Again — just like he promised.”

The burst of directives eclipses every president in nearly a century. Only Franklin D. Roosevelt signed more, reaching 200 in just 153 days.

Executive orders are the fast strikes of the presidency: they carry the force of law without requiring Congress, can be felt instantly, and can be erased just as quickly by a successor.

Trump’s orders so far have run the gamut — from cutting wasteful spending and tightening immigration enforcement to slapping tariffs on U.S. trading partners and keeping men out of women’s sports.
