During an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Friday, Dr. Anthony Fauci responded to criticism he has received after recently released emails show he seemed to be misleading the American public throughout the pandemic to avoid political controversy, calling such criticism “nonsense.”
When asked about the criticism he has been receiving, Fauci replied. “I mean, it is what it is, I’m a public figure, I’m going to take the arrows and the swings, but they’re just, they’re fabricated…. It’s all nonsense.”
Later in the interview, Fauci was asked about the current discussion over the origin of COVID-19. He responded, “There’s this concern, is it a natural evolution? Or is it something that happened out of a lab and accident or what have you? It is important to understand that, but it is being approached now in a very vehement way, in a very distorted way, I believe by attacking me.”
“I think that the question is extremely legitimate, you should want to know how this happened so that we can make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Fauci continued. “But what’s happened in the middle of all that, I become the object of extraordinary, I believe, completely inappropriate, distorted, misleading and misrepresented attacks, which, you know, it is what it is, but it’s happening. And that’s unfortunate.”

Emails released last week show Fauci was warned in January 2020 that COVID-19 had “unusual features” and that it “looks engineered,” before repeatedly denying that idea to in the following months. After one of his denials of the idea, Peter Daszak, a zoologist who had pushed the United States to fund the lab which COVID-19 potentially leaked from, sent an email to Fauci thanking him for denying the possibility of a lab leak.
Another email to Fauci in March 2020 from an expert “modeling this outbreak since January,” warned, “I’m confident that China stop counting dead COVID-19 infected bodies since ~January 7, 2020. They’ve been adding fabricated data daily to show (to save face) the world and their own people an impressive flattening of China outbreak curve.” Fauci forwarded the email because it was “too long for me to read.”
