Biden Mocks Oil Company CEO For Suggesting Solutions To Record High Gas Prices

As gas prices have reached record highs, President Biden mocked Chevron’s CEO Michael Wirth after Wirth sent the president a letter with advice on how his administration can help reduce gas prices but criticized his attempts to “vilify” the oil industry.

“He’s mildly sensitive,” Biden said of Wirth. “I didn’t know they’d get their feelings hurt that quickly. Look, we need more refining capacity. This idea that they don’t have oil to drill and to bring up is simply not true.”

“We ought to be able to work something out whereby they’re able to increase refining capacity and still not give up on transitioning to renewable energy,” Biden continued. “They’re both within realm of possibility.”

In his letter, Wirth said that Chevron wanted to work together with the Biden administration to reduce gas prices, but that President Biden’s efforts to “vilify” the oil industry are “not beneficial.”

“Chevron and its 37,000 employees work every day to help provide the world with the energy it demands and to lift up the lives of billions of people who rely on these supplies,” Wirth wrote. “Notwithstanding these efforts, your Administration has largely sought to criticize, and at times vilify, our industry. These actions are not beneficial to meeting the challenges we face and are not what the American people deserve.”

“While today’s geopolitical situation is contributing to this energy crisis, bringing prices down and increasing supply will require a change in approach. You have called on our industry to increase energy production,” he continued. “We agree. Let’s work together. The U.S. energy sector needs cooperation and support from your Administration for our country to return to a path toward greater energy security, economic prosperity, and environmental protection.”

Wirth’s letter came a week after American Petroleum Institute (API) CEO Mike Sommers also sent a letter to Biden similarly giving the president advice on how to reduce gas prices. Sommers went as far as to outline a 10-point plan for Biden to follow to alleviate the record high gas prices that began rising after he took office.

“While members of your administration have recently discussed the need for additional supplies to solve the energy crisis, your administration has restricted oil and natural gas development, canceled energy infrastructure projects, imposed regulatory uncertainty and proposed new tax increases on American oil and gas producers competing globally,” Sommers wrote. “Respectfully, the American people need a different direction to solve this crisis.”

“API’s ‘10 in 2022 Plan’ outlined above offers this new direction,” Sommers added. “The plan has the potential to lead to an era of collaboration between the government and the private sector to meet our growing energy needs and to provide a measure of relief for the American people. We request the opportunity to work with your administration to help maintain the United States’ essential leadership position in the world.”
