Representative Adam Schiff has been used as a pawn by the Russian government yet again. Schiff, a champion for the misinformation Russia provided in the anti-Trump dossier, might actually be the misinformation MVP. Schiff’s most recent stroke of genius came directly from his own committee, who was briefed by an intelligence officer who overstated that Moscow preferred that President Trump wins re-election.
This information conveniently found its way to the New York Times who willingly printed this information as undisputed fact. This NYT’s report was then parroted by every talking head in the mass media, who used it as evidence to claim that the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians. Their hatred of President Trump blinded them from seeing that this report made no sense.
The facts show that President Trump, and his administration, have been far more adversarial to Russia when compared to previous administrations. President Trump delivered anti-tank missiles to Ukraine to be used against Russia, strengthened NATO, ripped up the nuclear deal with Iran (a Russian ally), authorized military force against Russians in Syria, began withdrawing from the INF Treaty because Moscow was cheating, and he kicked out more diplomats than Obama ever did.
By contrast, Bernie Sanders, who honeymooned in the Soviet Union, was briefed by the intel communities that Russia may be trying to help his campaign over a month before these reports were made public. With Vladimir Putin all but publicly saying he wants to reform the Soviet Union, an alliance with a candidate who spoke of the accomplishments of the USSR makes a lot more sense than an alliance with the candidate whose slogan is “America First.”
The Intelligence Community Assessment stated that the main goal of the Russian 2016 interference was to cause chaos through disinformation.
The US Government can certainly do a better job combating their disinformation, however, with fake online accounts spreading disinformation, as well as Democratic congressional leaders spreading misleading information that they view as politically expeditious to their cause, it is an uphill battle against a constant onslaught of fake news.
