Give Hasan Piker this much. He doesn’t make you guess.
The streamer, one of the most-watched voices on the American left, was mid-rant this week when he turned his fire on moderate Democrats, the ones who resist the party’s progressive wing.
“I will throw you in prison, okay? I want to put you physically behind a prison. I want Chinese-style communism to happen inside of the Democratic Party right now, okay?” he said. “I want to do Cultural Revolution s**t when I see that.”
He wasn’t talking about Republicans. He was talking about his own side.
That’s the part worth sitting with.
Most people hear “Cultural Revolution” and picture something vague. Red books. Marching students. Old newsreel.
It was more specific than that.
From 1966 to 1976, Mao Zedong turned China’s young people loose on anyone he considered insufficiently loyal. Teachers were beaten by their students. Neighbors informed on neighbors. Children denounced parents. The dead number in the hundreds of thousands by cautious counts, and far more by others.
And here’s what gets lost: the Cultural Revolution was, above all, a purge of the Communist Party itself.
Mao’s main targets weren’t capitalists. There weren’t many left. His targets were fellow communists he judged too moderate, too practical, too slow.
Liu Shaoqi was the head of state. He was branded a traitor, beaten at struggle sessions, denied medicine, and left to die in detention.
Deng Xiaoping was purged and sent to work in a tractor factory. His son was thrown from a window at Peking University and never walked again.
Xi Jinping’s father was purged too. The teenage Xi was shipped off to a cave village in the countryside.
These weren’t enemies of the revolution. They were the revolution. It came for them anyway.
So when Piker says he wants Chinese-style communism “inside of the Democratic Party,” he has, whether he knows it or not, picked exactly the right historical model. It’s a revolution aimed at the moderates in your own house.
He should be taken at his word.
Some will say it’s just talk. A streamer doing a bit. Online theater for an audience that likes the heat.
Maybe.
But words like these don’t land in a vacuum. Piker isn’t a fringe account with forty followers. He has millions of viewers. Democratic candidates have courted him. He’s been treated as a bridge to young voters the party badly wants back.
This is the same man who once said America deserved 9/11. The party shrugged then, too.
That’s the real story. Not that one loud man said something ugly. Loud men say ugly things every day.
The story is the silence around him.
Where are the Democratic leaders saying, plainly, that no one in their party should be threatened with prison for holding the wrong opinion? Where are the moderates standing up for themselves? They’re the ones named in the threat.
It shouldn’t be hard. It’s the easiest statement in politics. We don’t jail people for disagreeing with us. That’s the whole deal. That’s what separates a republic from what Piker is describing.
Americans have always had a healthy allergy to this sort of thing. We’ve fought bitterly, voted angrily, said terrible things about each other. But we have never treated disagreement itself as a crime. That’s not luck. It’s a choice, renewed by each generation.
The Democratic Party now has to make that choice about one of its own.
History offers a lesson for the moderates Piker is aiming at. In every revolution of this kind, the people in the middle assumed it wouldn’t reach them. They kept their heads down. They told themselves the radicals were useful, or harmless, or just blowing off steam.
Then the knock came.
Liu Shaoqi could have told them how that ends.
