President Trump closed his 9/11 address Friday with a message about what survived the attacks: the American spirit.
Speaking at the Pentagon 25 years after nearly 3,000 people were killed, Trump contrasted the hatred behind the attacks with the resilience he said the country has demonstrated in the quarter-century since.
“September 11 reminded us of the terrible power of hate,” Trump said. “The 25 years since have shown us the even greater power of the American spirit to endure and prevail, and to win.”
“And today, our country is stronger than it has ever been before. It has never been as strong as it is right now.”
Trump’s remarks came during a ceremony honoring the 184 people killed at the Pentagon — 125 inside the building and 59 passengers and crew aboard American Airlines Flight 77.
The president and first lady Melania Trump listened as the victims’ names were read aloud.
Trump also looked beyond the 25th anniversary, saying the obligation to remember 9/11 belongs to generations that were not alive when the attacks happened.
“Because of that spirit, when future generations come here in 25, 100 or 250 years from now, they will stand in a nation that is free and unyielding in the face of evil,” Trump said, adding that they would continue to honor “the heroes of 9/11.”
“It will never, ever be forgotten. Will never be forgotten. And we can never forget.”
Trump finished by recognizing the families who lost loved ones, the first responders and the U.S. military.
“God bless our 9/11 families. God bless our unbelievable, brave and beautiful first responders. God bless the United States military and God bless America.”
