House Republicans are rolling out a sweeping election overhaul package ahead of the 2026 midterms, pitching new national standards for federal elections that would tighten voter registration rules, expand voter ID requirements, and curb several voting methods long targeted by election-integrity advocates.
The House Administration Committee on Thursday unveiled the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act, which GOP leaders say is meant to boost voter confidence and standardize baseline safeguards nationwide.
“Americans should be confident their elections are being run with integrity — including commonsense voter ID requirements, clean voter rolls, and citizenship verification,” Committee Chairman Bryan Steil (R-WI) said in a statement.
Steil said the bill’s guardrails “will improve voter confidence, bolster election integrity, and make it easy to vote, but hard to cheat.”
According to a summary, the package would:
• Require citizenship verification when registering to vote
• Require photo ID to cast a ballot in federal elections
• Mandate auditable paper ballots
• Require mail ballots to be received by Election Day to count (with an exception for overseas military voters)
• Bar universal vote-by-mail systems that automatically mail ballots to all voters
• Ban ranked-choice voting in federal races
Democrats and voting-rights groups argue proposals like these risk disenfranchising eligible voters—particularly those without easy access to citizenship documentation—setting up a familiar, combustible midterm fight in a narrowly divided Congress.
Big swing. Big consequences. And an election rules brawl that’s only just getting warmed up.
The #MEGAAct will restore Americans’ trust in our elections.
