Tax Dollars in the Dark: Walz Faces Reckoning After Viral Video Exposes Daycare Fraud

After a viral video from independent journalist Nick Shirley ripped the lid off what he claims is a sprawling aid-fraud scheme, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is suddenly on defense, explaining how millions in taxpayer dollars flowed through programs now under question and into shuttered sites.

His spokesperson told Fox News the governor has been at this for years — that Walz “has worked for years to crack down on fraud and ask the state legislature for more authority to take aggressive action.” The spokesperson said he “has strengthened oversight — including launching investigations into these specific facilities, one of which was already closed.”

They added that Walz has “hired an outside firm to audit payments to high-risk programs, shut down the Housing Stabilization Services program entirely, announced a new statewide program integrity director, and supported criminal prosecutions.”

But the 43-minute video keeps speaking.

Shirley — joined by a Minnesotan named David — drove across Minneapolis, visiting child-care and learning centers allegedly tied to Somali-run operations.

What they found: locked doors, dark windows, staff declining questions — and a sign with its own indictment in crooked letters: “Quality Learing Center.” According to the video, the site was supposed to serve at least 99 children and had taken roughly $4 million in state funds.

Shirley took his findings to Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show, saying the alleged scheme was so obvious “a kindergartner could figure out there is fraud going on.” He added, “Fraud is fraud, and we work too hard simply just to be paying taxes and enabling fraud to be happening.”

Then the warning: “There better be change… investigations have been launched just from that video alone… we work way too hard to be paying taxes and not knowing where our money’s going.”

A viral video, a defensive governor, and taxpayer dollars trailing into silence.

The questions are loud — the answers will have to be louder.
