Kevin McCarthy Ousted As House Speaker After Democrats Side With Matt Gaetz

On Tuesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was removed from his position after Democrats voted in support of Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) motion for McCarthy to vacate the speakership.

The 216-210 vote was the first time in U.S. history that the House ever removed a speaker. Seven other Republicans joined the House Democrats to oust McCarthy, including: Reps. Andy Biggs (AZ), Ken Buck (CO), Eli Crane (AZ), Bob Good (VA), Matt Rosendale (MT), Tim Burchett (TN), and Nancy Mace (SC).

The move angered many Republicans, including former President Donald Trump who slammed the decision on Truth Social.

“Why is it that Republicans are always fighting among themselves, why aren’t they fighting the Radical Left Democrats who are destroying our Country?” Trump wrote on social media

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), who has been named Speaker Pro Tempore until the House names a new speaker, aggressively slammed the gavel down out of apparent frustration as he recessed the House for conference meetings.
