Less than one year after President Biden entered office, the United States has a set a record for the seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases.
The record comes after the United States also hit a new high for the number of new COVID-19 cases recorded in a single day.
“Wednesday’s seven-day average of new daily cases, 301,000, was also a record, compared with 267,000 the day before,” The New York Times reported. “In the past week, more than two million cases have been reported nationally, and 15 states and territories reported more cases than in any other seven-day period.”
The news comes as the United States is projected to see an additional 140 million infections from January 1 to March, 2022, as a result of the new Omicron variant, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine (IHME), the United States may see about 140 million new infections from January 1 to March 1, 2022, as a result of Omicron.
“We are expecting an enormous surge in infections … so, an enormous spread of omicron,” IHME director Dr. Chris Murray said, according to USA Today. “Total infections in the U.S. we forecast are going from about 40% of the U.S. having been infected so far, to having in the next 2 to 3 months, 60% of the U.S. getting infected with omicron.”
The record-breaking surge in new COVID-19 cases comes nearly one year into Biden’s presidency, despite his repeated promises to “shut down the virus” if elected.
