Border Patrol agents encountered 207,416 migrants at the southern border in June, bringing the total number in Fiscal Year 2022 to 1,746,119 – already higher than last year’s record number of 1,734,686.

“CBP announces 207,416 migrant encounters at the border in June, down from the record high of 239,000 in May, but the fourth month in a row of more than 200,000. There were 15,272 unaccompanied children in June, an increase over May (14,678). 6 terror watchlist hits in June,” Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin wrote on Twitter.

“There have now been 1,746,119 encounters at the southern border in FY’22, already eclipsing the record setting 1,734,686 set in all of FY’21 and there are still 3 months left in FY’22. This year is on pace to absolutely shatter last year’s record and push over 2 million,” Melugin added.

The news comes shortly after the Biden administration’s inaction on combatting the border crisis forced Texas Governor Greg Abbott to issue an executive order authorizing Texas military and law enforcement forces to arrest and return illegal immigrants in the state to the border. Under federal law, only federal agents have the authority to enforce immigration law.

The executive order authorizes and empowers “the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to apprehend illegal immigrants who illegally cross the border between ports of entry and return them to the border. The Biden Administration’s decision to end Title 42 expulsions and the Remain-in-Mexico policy has led to historic levels of illegal crossings, with 5,000 migrants being apprehended over the July 4th weekend, creating a border crisis that has overrun communities along the border and across Texas,” Abbott’s office said in a press release.

“While President Biden refuses to do his job and enforce the immigration laws enacted by Congress, the State of Texas is once again stepping up and taking unprecedented action to protect Americans and secure our southern border,” said Governor Abbott. “The cartels have become emboldened and enriched by President Biden’s open border policies, smuggling in record numbers of people, weapons, and deadly drugs like fentanyl.”
