There are few things colder than a human voice promising another’s pain. That was the sound that greeted Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) when he pressed play.
The freshman senator received a profanity-laced voicemail from Haley McKnight, a candidate for the Helena City Commission — a message so vicious it stunned even hardened political staffers. The recording, obtained and verified by Fox News Digital, was left in July, shortly after Sheehy voted with fellow Republicans to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
“Hi, this is Haley McKnight. I’m a constituent in Helena, Montana,” the message began — before descending into a storm of hatred.
“I just wanted to let you know that you are the most insufferable kind of coward and thief. You just stripped away healthcare for 17 million Americans, and I hope you’re really proud of that. I hope that one day you get pancreatic cancer, and it spreads throughout your body so fast that they can’t even treat you for it,” McKnight said.
“I hope you die in the street like a dog,” she continued. “One day, you’re going to live to regret this. I hope that your children never forgive you. I hope that you are infertile. I hope that you manage to never get a boner ever again. You are the worst piece of s— I have ever, ever, ever had the misfortune of looking at … God forbid that you ever meet me on the streets because I will make you regret it. F— you. I hope you die.”
The call came from a candidate who describes herself as a business owner and community leader. McKnight, originally from North Carolina, owns Sage & Oats Trading Post, a “successful Native American-owned gift store,” and runs a design business, Morningstar Design Ltd Co. She also serves as president of the Helena Young Professionals and was recognized among the Helena Chamber’s “20 under 40.”
The voice in that voicemail spoke of politics — but what it really revealed was the temperature of a country too often burning with rage.
