‘Promises Made, Promises Kept’: Press Sec Confirms Start Date for Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Friday that, despite false reports from Reuters, President Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China will begin this Saturday, February 1st.

“The president will be implementing tomorrow 25% tariffs on Mexico, 25% tariffs on Canada, and a 10% tariff on China for the illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans,” Leavitt said at a White House press briefing.

“These are promises made, promises kept by the President,” Leavitt added.

One reporter asked if this was the beginning of a trade war, citing recent comments from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said “We’re ready with a response – a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response. It’s not what we want, but if he moves forward, we will also act.”

“I don’t think so,” Leavitt replied. “I think the President is going to implement those tariffs tomorrow, and he will respond to Mr. Trudeau’s comments in due time.”
