Are Powell’s days numbered?

According to a New York Post report, President Trump discussed firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell for refusing to lower interest rates — flying in the face of Trump’s wishes.

The confirmation follows a Bloomberg News report citing people familiar with the matter, which said Trump raised the plan during meetings with GOP lawmakers on Tuesday.

An administration official close to the president, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the talks with congressional Republicans to The Post.

“They expressed approval for firing him. The President indicated he likely will soon,” the source said.

But Trump denied the report when asked about Powell during an Oval Office Q & A.

“I think he does a terrible job and he’s costing us a lot of money and we fight through it,” Trump said, adding, “He’s a terrible [appointee] … [but] we’re not planning on doing anything.”

“I’m not talking about that — fortunately, we get to make a change in the next eight months or so,” Trump added. “We want to see low interest rates — our country deserves it.”

In typical Trump fashion, he kept the press guessing, saying, “I don’t rule anything out.”
