Governor Ricketts was joined at the ceremony by Nebraskans who have been victims of communist oppression, including former State Senator Lydia Brasch whose family fled Ukraine to escape Soviet communist tyranny.

“An estimated 100 million people died from political purges, religious persecutions, mass starvations, and other crimes against humanity carried out by communist regimes such as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the People’s Republic of China” states the press release.

In an interview with Fox News, Ricketts said, “the Chinese Communist Party is recognizing their 100thanniversary, and they are going to talk about all the things the Chinese Community Party has done in a very positive light. But it’s also important to remember that whenever communism has been implemented across this world, what we have seen is a lot of human suffering.”

“We need to keep putting pressure on the Chinese Communist Party to really play by international norms and to treat their people with respect the way we would expect countries who are part of the world community to behave” he continued.

The press release from Rickett’s office added, “The Governor reaffirmed Nebraska’s commitment to be a home for people from around the world seeking to live, work, and worship freely according to their conscience.”
