Mr. Obama, Meet Mr. Obama’s FBI.

Former presidents have one big advantage over the rest of us. When they speak, people assume they’ve done the homework.

So when Barack Obama broke his long, comfortable silence this month to defend Rep. Ilhan Omar, it landed. He called the Trump administration’s investigation into her “so appalling.” He said the full weight of the federal government was crashing down on a law-abiding congresswoman because she’d dared to criticize the president.

He told Americans they should be outraged.

Strong words, delivered with the cool authority of a man defending a principle.

Then came Thursday.

The New York Times reported that the FBI and Homeland Security investigated Omar’s marriage back in 2016. The summer of 2016, under Obama’s FBI, Obama’s DHS, in Obama’s last year in office. Investigators, according to current and former officials, found “some evidence” the marriage was fraudulent. Prosecutors dropped it because the clock had run out on the statute of limitations.

So the probe Obama calls appalling started under Obama.

You’d think that might have come up.

Maybe he didn’t know. Presidents don’t track every case. Fine. But if you don’t know, you don’t write like you do. And you certainly don’t lecture the country about the abuse of federal power without mentioning that federal power, under your own name, looked at the same marriage and found enough to take seriously.

To be fair: Omar denies all of it. She calls the allegations lies and a smear. She hasn’t been charged with anything. “Some evidence” isn’t proof, and a case killed by a deadline never got its day in court. She gets the same presumption as anyone else.

But fairness runs both ways. If the investigation was legitimate in 2016, it’s hard to call it an attack on democracy in 2026.

The marriage hasn’t changed. The facts haven’t changed. Only the president has.

And the new inquiry goes further. It’s looking at her late father’s immigration paperwork and her age when the family arrived from Somalia. Obama’s statement declared she came here legally as a minor, which is one of the exact questions investigators are still trying to answer. He didn’t just skip his own administration’s history. He ruled on an open case in a social media post.

Hypocrisy isn’t the problem. Washington runs on it. The problem is how easy it was for him. Outrage first, facts later, if at all. A former president assuming nobody would check.

Somebody checked. It was the New York Times.

The shame of it is that he could have written something better. Something like: My administration looked at this too. Here’s what we found. Here’s why we stopped. Here’s why I think this is different. People would have listened, including plenty who disagree with him.

Instead, he left out the most important fact in the story.

The country has all the instant outrage it can use.

What it needs from people who’ve held the job is memory, the willingness to say: I’ve seen this from the inside, and here’s the truth about it.

Obama had that chance. He went for the applause line.
