Medical Center Worker ‘Intentionally Removed’ COVID Vaccine from Refrigeration Causing 500 Doses to be Discarded

A Wisconsin clinic discovered five hundred doses of the Moderna vaccine were not appropriately refrigerated and needed to be discarded. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the incident was “intentional.” When reports first emerged a few days ago, Advocate Aurora Health said 500 doses were discarded because they were not being refrigerated and were “unintended human error.”

However, Advocate Aurora Health released an updated statement Wednesday night with additional, and devastating, information:

Earlier this week, we learned that 57 vials of Moderna vaccine were removed from a pharmacy refrigerator at Aurora Medical Center…resulting in more than 500 doses of vaccine being discarded. We immediately launched an internal review and were led to believe this was caused by inadvertent human error. The individual in question today acknowledged that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration. We have notified the appropriate authorities for further investigation. We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine. This was a violation of our core values, and the individual is no longer employed by us.

Both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, currently being distributed in the United States, require cold storage. Therefore, the vaccine vials are very vulnerable when all one has to do is remove them from refrigeration.
