Following Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) removal from speakership after Democrats sided with Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) motion to remove McCarthy from the position, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) discussed his announcement that he would be running for House Speaker and how he would handle the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
McCarthy was removed from his position as House Speaker after Democrats sided with Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) motion to remove McCarthy from the position.
The 216-210 vote was made on Tuesday and was the first time in U.S. history that the House ever removed a House Speaker. Seven other Republicans joined Gaetz and the House Democrats to oust McCarthy, including: Reps. Andy Biggs (AZ), Ken Buck (CO), Eli Crane (AZ), Bob Good (VA), Matt Rosendale (MT), Tim Burchett (TN), and Nancy Mace (SC).
In discussions of the situation, Jordan specifically said that if he wins the speakership, then he will be against sending another aid package to Ukraine.
His comments came during an interview with CNN’s Manu Raju.
“Are you willing to move forward with an aid package to Ukraine if you’re speaker?” Raju asked.
“I’m against that,” Jordan responded. “At some point, we’re going to have to deal with this appropriations process in the right way. We’re going to try to do that in the next 41 days.”
“The most pressing issue on Americans’ mind is not Ukraine — it is the border situation, and is crime on streets,” he added.
