Border officials encountered more than 203,000 migrants attempting to illegally cross the southern border in August, bringing the annual total to more than 2 million for the first time ever, according to new data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

“It’s official. For the first time, migrant encounters at the border have surpassed two million in one year,” Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin wrote on Twitter. “CBP reports there were 203,598 migrant encounters at the border in August, bringing the total for FY’22 to 2,150,370, and there is still one month left to go.”

“A reminder, these numbers do NOT include known gotaways, which DHS sources tell us are already well over 500,000 for FY’22 so far.” Melugin added.

According to a press release from CBP, the number of migrant encounters in August was a 1.7 percent increase compared to July.

“Of those, 22 percent involved individuals who had at least one prior encounter in the previous 12 months,” the press release said. “More than two-thirds (69 percent) of all southwest land border encounters were single adults, with 140,210 encounters in August, a 4.2 percent increase compared to July.”

By June of this year, the total number of migrant encounters for fiscal year 2022 had already broken the previous record high of 1,734,686 encounters in all of fiscal year 2021 – which was also set under the Biden administration. With the 203,598 migrant encounters in August, fiscal year 2022 has now broken that record by more than 415,000 encounters.
