Defense Secretary pick Pete Hegseth is on the Hill this week meeting with Senators and making the case for his appointment to Trump’s Cabinet. Hegseth’s nomination faces an uphill climb as misconduct allegations and hit pieces pile up.
Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) says nothing will come of the allegations.
“I’ve looked at all the personal stuff — and again, I’ve known him for a long time — and there’s not going to be anything to this at the end of the day,” Tuberville said.
“He’s got great work ethic. He’s very, very smart. He understands the business side as well as the military side — been in 20 years. He’s actually fought in wars,” he added. “But he’s a good age too, somebody that can relate to the young men and women that we need to recruit in the military.”
Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) says if there’s anything to find, it will come out in the confirmation hearings.
“That’s why God made confirmation hearings,” said Sen. John Kennedy, Louisiana Republican. “We have good staffs. We have good investigators. They will get to the bottom of all of these allegations. We’ll spend a lot of time with the nominees, asking them pointed questions, and I’m looking forward to that process.”
Hegseth was asked Wednesday morning if he’s had any conversations with President-elect Donald Trump recently.
“I spoke to the President-elect this morning. He said ‘keep going, keep fighting,” Hegseth said.
“So you’re in this all the way?” the reporter asked.
“Why would I back down? I’ve always been a fighter,” Hegseth said.
