Donald Trump isn’t officially president until next month — but he’s already working to fix the crisis at the southern border. According to Bloomberg, Trump’s transition team is already back-channeling with Mexico and El Salvador to lay the groundwork for deportation efforts.
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration “is prepared to work in coordination with federal, state, and local authorities in the face of possible mass deportations,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement in response to questions from Bloomberg News.
From Bloomberg:
Trump’s transition team has contacted the governments of Mexico and El Salvador through back channels about taking in some of the millions of undocumented migrants set to be expelled under his deportation plan, Bloomberg News reported Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Trump’s team and informal advisers have had detailed conversations with representatives of the two Latin American governments, in some cases via businesspeople, about taking back migrants, according to the people.
The incoming administration is seeking to prepare broad understandings so that detailed work on deportations can begin immediately after he takes office.
Incoming Border Czar Tom Homan has been hitting the news circuit to deliver a very simple message about Trump’s deportation plan: it starts on Day One.
Homan reiterated this policy stance during a CNN appearance this week.
“Day one – ICE officers across the country will be out on the streets,” Homan told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.
“Right out of the gate — the president has made it clear, and I‘ve made it clear — the priority right out of the gates, is public safety threats and national security threats. And there’s plenty of them to find,” Homan continued.
“I looked at the data under the Biden administration, the deportation of criminal aliens have decreased 74 percent,” Homan continued. “So, we have all those folks that the Biden administration failed to deport, plus you got this over ten million encounters on the southern border that came across.”
“So, the public safety threats are plenty, and it’s going to keep us busy,” Homan added.
