It wasn’t the prize he once chased, but it was a moment all his own.

Donald Trump was awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize on Friday, an honor handed out during the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C.

“This is your prize, this is your peace prize,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, as he bestowed the honor on the POTUS. “This is what we want from a leader — a leader that cares about the people,” Infantino added.

“This is truly one of the great honors of my life,” Trump said, stressing he had ended wars and “saved millions and millions of lives.”

“The world is a safer place now,” he continued.

“The United States, one year ago, was not doing too well, and now I have to say we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world, and we’re going to keep it that way.”

Ever since FIFA unveiled the new prize last month, noting it would “reward individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace,” Trump was the assumed recipient.

But ahead of the ceremony, Trump played coy on the red carpet.

“I don’t know that I’m getting it. I haven’t been officially noticed. I’ve been hearing about a peace prize — and I’m here to represent our country in a different sense,” Trump told reporters.

Infantino has been in Trump’s orbit throughout the run-up to next summer’s World Cup, appearing with him repeatedly, attending his inauguration, and making several visits to Washington.

On the eve of the draw, he sat in the front row as Trump held a peace agreement signing between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
