Democrats are eager to rebuild their party after President Trump’s victory. But there’s a major hurdle: a lack of funding.
According to a report from The Hill, Democratic donors, from big bundlers to small-dollar contributors, remain frustrated by Kamala Harris’ landslide election loss and the party’s uninspired direction.
“I’ll be blunt: The Democratic Party is f‑‑‑ing terrible. Plain and simple,” said one major donor who spoke to The Hill. “It doesn’t get much worse.”
Another donor echoed the frustration. “They want us to spend money—but for what? No message, no organization, no forward thinking. The party never learned its lesson from 2016. They stuck to the same playbook, the same ineffective strategies, and for what?”
Much of the donor frustration stems from the unprecedented 2024 election cycle. Many felt misled by the party and Biden’s reelection campaign. Until the June Democratic debate, donors were assured Biden could defeat Trump—despite growing doubts.
When Biden badly botched the debate, raising fresh concerns about his age, donors felt the campaign was still stringing them along, ignoring their warnings even as they voiced their concerns to aides.
“Frankly, a lot of donors I’ve talked to don’t think their voice mattered in 2024, so I’ve been doing more listening than talking,” said strategist Steve Schale, who ran a pro-Biden super PAC during the election.
A recent Quinnipiac Poll found that the approval of the congressional Democrats is in the toilet at 20%. Out-of-touch House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries defended his party during an interview with Jake Tapper.
“House Republicans — they’ve been on the run. They are feeling the pressure of the fact that their policies are deeply unpopular with the American people,” Jeffries told Tapper.
