As Democrats begin public hearings to attempt to oust the President of the United States, Trump continues to focus on serious issues. On Wednesday, President Trump met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss the very real and imminent threats facing the world emanating from the Middle East.
Trump’s tweet this morning displays the irony. He tweeted the House Impeachment inquiry is “trying to stop me, because I’m fighting for you. And I’ll never let that happen” just before he is set to meet with President Erdogan about arguably some of the most pressing security issues the world currently faces.
After Turkish forces entered Syria last month, Congress passed a bill giving debilitating sanctions to Turkish officials and its army. Today’s meeting will be to discuss “Turkey’s decision to buy a Russian air defense system despite its membership in NATO” as well as the recent attacks on “Kurdish forces who have fought with the U.S. against the Islamic State group” reports the Associated Press.
This all seems like an incredibly important conversation that must be had between the United States and Turkey. Good thing Trump is not listening to the liberal Democrats.
Some lawmakers do not condone Trump inviting Erdogan to the White House, but Trump notes “Turkey has been a critical U.S. ally for decades and cites the economic upside to the relationship as a reason to overcome the differences.” In essence, President Trump is acting…like a President.
Having a meeting with foreign leaders in no way indicates “extending hospitality and exchanging niceties with a dictator” New Hampshire Democrat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said. As a State Department official stated, “Trump is not rewarding Erdogan with a White House visit but is conducting diplomacy.” Furthermore, Trump’s diplomatic efforts are extremely needed “because of the volatile situation in Syria that has displaced tens of thousands of people.”
A senior State Department official said that the U.S. is following up on reports of human rights violations” so why are Democrats so upset? Additionally, Trump “will be expressing continued concern about Erdogan’s purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system. The U.S. and fellow NATO nations say the S-400 would aid Russian intelligence and compromise a U.S.-led fighter jet program.” This all seems like an incredibly important conversation that must be had between the United States and Turkey. Good thing Trump is not listening to the liberal Democrats.
