During his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, President Joe Biden said that he will “always” have the backs of “younger transgender Americans” so that they can “be [themselves] and reach [their] God-given potential.”
“And for our LGBTQ+ Americans, let’s finally get the bipartisan Equality Act to my desk. The onslaught of state laws targeting transgender Americans and their families is wrong,” Biden said. “As I said last year, especially to our younger transgender Americans, I will always have your back as your President, so you can be yourself and reach your God-given potential.”

Biden’s comments come as multiple states have begun to enact legislation that requires athletes to compete in the same category as their biological sex.
For example, last month South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (R) signed bill banning transgender girls from competing in female school sports due to the unfair biological advantages transgender girls would have.
“This bill is about fairness,” Noem said after signing the bill. “It’s about allowing biological females in their sex to compete fairly in a level playing field that gives them opportunities for success.”
