Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot joined thousands of people crammed together on the streets of Chicago to celebrate the media’s announcement that Joe Biden is the new president-elect. Zero social distancing occurred; many were wearing masks but the Mayor took hers off to speak on a bullhorn.
However, gathering to celebrate a Democrat elected to become the next U.S. President, or to violently threaten police and riot, is where the fun stops in Chicago. Now Mayor Lightfoot claims she is getting serious about safety, announcing a new round of social distancing orders.
The order will last 30 days minimum, and city officials are saying Chicagoans need to “cancel traditional Thanksgiving celebrations.” In a statement Thursday, Lightfoot said, “if we continue on the path we’re on and you and me and others don’t step up and do more, our estimates are that we could see 1,000 more Chicagoans die from this virus by the end of the year.”
To take Lightfoot’s advice seriously is simply laughable, considering she tweeted a video of herself celebrating in the middle of Chicago citizens just days ago with the caption, “This is a great day for our city and our country. We are taking our democracy back. #BidenHarris2020.” However, if you want to celebrate Thanksgiving with even as few as six of your family members, Lightfoot says ‘hell no.’
New guidelines tell people to limit in-house guests to “essential workers” only, such as healthcare workers or childcare providers. Lightfoot says the “major portion of that spread is happening in our homes and private venues, with the friends and family, who we love and trust in these spaces people feel safe we/you feel safe, and you let your guard down. And you’re not as diligent…we have to stop and reverse this trend in order to save lives.” Chicago citizens should just tell Lightfoot they are having a Biden-elect celebration on Thanksgiving; that way they’re exempt.
