There is a particular sound a political lie makes when it finally collapses. It is not a bang. It is a shrug, followed by applause from the people who swore it never happened.
Speaker Mike Johnson heard that sound on Friday.
In an X post, Johnson shared video of California Gov. Gavin Newsom openly boasting about expanding Medi-Cal to undocumented immigrants — a policy Democrats and their media allies long insisted did not exist, or at least did not matter.
“Remember when the media LIED REPEATEDLY and said that Democrats do NOT give health care to illegal aliens — and didn’t want to? Well now Gavin Newsom is BRAGGING about doing exactly that. Surely the retractions, corrections, and apologies are coming any minute now,” Johnson wrote.
The point was not subtle.
It wasn’t meant to be.
For years, voters were told this wasn’t happening.
That it was a myth.
A talking point.
A scare tactic.
Now the governor of the largest state in the union is taking a victory lap.
California’s Medi-Cal expansion to undocumented residents began quietly in 2019, covering children first. Adults followed in stages, with full eligibility extended by 2024. The policy was real all along — just inconvenient to admit.
Reality, however, has a way of sending the bill.
Facing a projected $68 billion state budget deficit, California announced a December 2025 enrollment freeze for undocumented adults aged 19 and older. The benefits remain. The money, it turns out, does not.
The story here isn’t just about health care.
It’s about trust.
First they denied it.
Then they defended it.
Now they brag about it.
And the apologies?
Still “coming any minute now.”
