Conservatives may have lost the State Supreme Court battle, but they won the Voter ID war…
President Donald Trump said Republicans should have the upper hand in Wisconsin “for years to come” after voters approved a constitutional amendment to enshrine voter ID requirements.
Over 60% of Badger State voters supported the measure, which makes it harder to roll back the state’s voter ID laws. Although Wisconsin has required voter ID since 2011, Republicans pushed for the amendment to prevent future challenges from Democrats or the state’s liberal Supreme Court.
Trump celebrated the outcome on TRUTH Social Tuesday night, calling it “possibly the biggest win of the night” for Republicans, who also won two U.S. House seats in Florida special elections.
“VOTER I.D. JUST APPROVED IN WISCONSIN ELECTION. Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT. This is a BIG WIN FOR REPUBLICANS, MAYBE THE BIGGEST WIN OF THE NIGHT,” Trump wrote. “IT SHOULD ALLOW US TO WIN WISCONSIN, LIKE I JUST DID IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!”
A Gallup poll from October showed that 84% of those surveyed approve of photo identification being required at polling places, compared to just 15% who said they are opposed.
Elon Musk, who spent millions on the State Supreme Court race, previously stressed the importance of the voter ID ballot measure, calling it more important than the judiciary race.
“Even more important than the Wisconsin Supreme Court race is the ballot initiative to add voter ID to the state constitution, which will ensure integrity in elections,” Musk posted prior to the election.
Following the ballot measure win, Musk said “this was an important thing.”
