The House of Representatives passed the amended Laken Riley Act on Wednesday, handing President Donald Trump his first big legislative win. The bill, named after a murdered Georgia nursing student, requires criminal migrants lacking legal status to be detained.
Recent polling from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found over half of Americans said immigration is an important priority for Trump to tackle this year.
Democrats in both the House and Senate voted to support the bill.
The House pro-Laken Riley Act Democrats, according to the House clerk’s website, included Reps. The Laken Riley Act, written by Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., requires ICE to take custody of and detain undocumented immigrants who are charged, arrested, or convicted of committing acts of “burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting.”
“It’s bittersweet,” Collins said after the vote. “For a young lady that wanted to dedicate her career and her life to saving lives, now her name will live on forever, and it will save lives.”
