During an interview with Fox News’ Howard Kurtz over the weekend, Republican California Gubernational Candidate Larry Elder was asked about Democrat California Governor Gavin Newsom’s attempt to paint Elder as anti-vaccine through a post on social media.

“The other day [Newsom] posted a CNN interview in which you said I don’t believe the science suggest that young people should be vaccinated. Newsom then tweeted this, Elder is spewing anti-vaccine lies, he’s willing to let young people die. Your response,” Kurtz said.

“Yes. If Elder become governor, people are going to drop dead in the streets. I’m not anti-vax despite what this ad says. I’ve been vaccinated because I’m in a high-risk category. And I urge people who are in categories that are high risk to be vaccinated,” Elder replied.

“But I don’t believe the science does compel children to be vaccinated,” Elder continued. “They’re not likely to contract the coronavirus, they’re not likely to get really sick, they’re not likely to go to hospital and they’re certainly not likely to die.”

“I believe that’s consistent with the science of people like Dr. Marty Makary from Johns Hopkins and Scott Atlas from Hoover,” Elder said. “I think that’s consistent. But the point is he’s trying to turn it into a referendum against scare.”

“Because he can’t defend his record on crime, he can’t defend his record on homelessness, he can’t defend his record on the rise of cost of living,” Elder added. “He can’t explain why people are leaving California for the first time in our state’s 170-year history.”

The recall election for California Governor Gavin Newsom is on September 14. If Newsom is recalled, Elder is the favorite to become the next governor of the state.
