Washington Post Caught Scrubbing Unflattering Story of Then-Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris

In July of 2019, the Washington Post released a profile on then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris about her relationship with her sister and aide, Maya Harris. However, that story is now gone from the media site, only to be replaced with an updated one published on January 11, 2020. Why the coverup?

One reporter noticed that the updated version “scrubbed an unflattering anecdote of Vice President Kamala Harris crassly laughing at the thought of a prisoner begging for a drink of water” reports the New York Post. The sneaky move was caught by the libertarian magazine Reason on Friday, which then made the Post simply link to the original story in the updated Jan. 11 post. In an attempt to Band-Aid their behavior, the newer story states “this story has been updated from an earlier published version.”

Opening the 2019 piece was Harris describing her grueling schedule on the campaign trail, saying turning to SoulCycle classes and walks on the beach with her husband were her outlet.  In a bizarre comparison to prisoners, Harris told the Washington Post reporter Ben Terris, “it’s a treat that a prisoner gets when they ask for, ‘A morsel of food please.”

Terris described Harris as “shoving her hands forward as if clutching a metal plate, her voice now trembling like an old British man locked in a Dickensian jail cell” imitating a prisoner. Harris continued, “And water! I just want wahtahhhh….Your standards really go out the f—ing window.” Terris noted the candidate burst into laughter. Such nice, politically correct speech from the future vice president.

Understanding that the incident did not shine a positive light on the vice president, the updated version “instead has a more general opening about past politicians turning to family members as their closest advisors” reports the New York Post. When the outlet was caught, a Washington Post spokeswoman gave the following excuse to Reason magazine:

“We should have kept both versions of the story on the Post’s site (the original and updated one), rather than redirecting to the updated version…we have now done that, and you will see the link to the original at the top of the updated version.” And so it begins; the media working as the Biden administration’s public relations sector, free of charge.
