Obamagate: Obama Must Testify

Obamagate has arrived. And it is now, finally, time to ask the legendary question from the Senate Watergate Committee’s Senator Howard Baker that was asked in the day about President Richard Nixon.

The question: “What did the President know – and when did he know it?”

Thanks to the release of FBI notes that accompanied the Justice Department announced that they were dropping the prosecution of General Michael Flynn, the American people have learned what many have suspected. Here is the story as headlined and reported by The Federalist’s Tristan Justice:

Grassley Demands Answers: ‘What Did Obama And Biden Know And When Did They Know It?’\

Make no mistake: Obamagate is blossoming in front of our eyes into the biggest scandal in American history, a scandal that makes Watergate look like a piker.

The story said this:

“Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley demanded answers from former President Barack Obama on the Senate floor Monday amid new revelations in recent weeks further exposing the Russiagate conspiracy claims as a deep-state coup attempt orchestrated by top officials in the previous administration.

‘Last week, former President Obama said the rule of law is at risk because of the Justice Department’s dismissal of the [Michael] Flynn case,’ Grassley said. ‘I believe the opposite is true. The rule of law is at risk if the federal government can get away with violating the Constitution to do what they did to Lt. Gen Flynn. And when it comes to those violations and other misconduct by former government officials, Obama and the mainstream media pundit circle are silent.’”

The Republicans should put an end to Obama’s selective silence – and summon him to testify to the Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the committee chaired by Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson. Or Senator Lindsey Graham’s Senate Judiciary Committee.

The essence here was captured by this story in The Federalist reported by Margot Cleveland.

Why Did Obama Tell The FBI To Hide Its Activities From The Trump Administration?
Even after Barack Obama had left office and James Comey had a new commander-in-chief to report to, Comey obeyed Obama by withholding intel from President Trump

Cleveland reports what is now everywhere and astonishes if it doesn’t surprise:

“Then came the January 5, 2017, meeting in the Oval Office where Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan, and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper briefed President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and National Security Advisor Susan Rice on Russia-related issues.

Rice later wrote an email to herself on January 20, 2017—Trump’s inauguration day and her last day in the White House—purporting to summarize that meeting. ‘On January 5, following a briefing by IC leadership on Russian hacking during the 2016 Presidential election,’ Rice wrote, ‘President Obama had a brief follow-on conversation with FBI Director Jim Comey and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates in the Oval Office. Vice President Biden and I were also present.’

….At the time Obama suggested to Yates and Comey—who were to keep their posts under the Trump administration—that the hold-overs consider withholding information from the incoming administration, Obama knew that President Trump had named Flynn to serve as national security advisor. Obama also knew there was an ongoing FBI investigation into Flynn premised on Flynn being a Russian agent.

Yet, rather than direct his team to provide the president-elect a briefing on the Russia investigation as it related to Flynn, Obama suggested it would be appropriate to withhold such information from the Trump administration.”

A bit of history. In October of 1974, President Gerald Ford became the first American president to testify before a congressional committee since Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War. The subject: Ford’s sudden pardon of his resigned and disgraced predecessor, President Nixon. Ford, earlier in life a longtime congressman and House Minority Leader, appeared voluntarily in front of his former colleagues in a hearing run by the Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee. He was responding to the firestorm of outrage his pardon had generated. The New York Times, as one example, thundered in an editorial that Ford’s pardon was a “profoundly unwise, divisive, and unjust act” that had totally destroyed Ford’s “credibility as a man of judgment, candor, and competence.”

Now, it’s Barack Obama’s turn – with the entire reputation of his presidency at stake. Not to mention his “credibility as a man of judgment, candor, and competence.”

Anyone with a basic knowledge of American government, let alone anyone who has ever worked for a president, understands instantly how dangerous, unacceptable – and potentially illegal –  this was. The job of an outgoing president and his team is to use the period between the election and the inauguration as a “transition” period in which everything the outgoing president knows is transferred to the incoming president.

Not only was this not done by Obama and his team, to the contrary they worked directly and deliberately to undermine the new president with an eye to disrupting his presidency if not eventually getting him impeached.

Enough is enough.

The very relevant question here is exactly the old Watergate question updated: “What did President Obama know and when did he know it?”

It is now May of 2020. Washington is in turmoil because of the virus. But it is now time – past time – to summon former President Obama, even if in a virtual hearing – and get the answer.

And when that answer is in hand? Give whatever is discovered as a referral to the Department of Justice.

Make no mistake: Obamagate is blossoming in front of our eyes into the biggest scandal in American history, a scandal that makes Watergate look like a piker.

It’s “discovery” time. Let’s get on with it.
